  • I was up late getting our website ready for Genius and Soul’s January 1 launch date. I must have been in deep because I dreamt of resolving a formatting problem with WordPress. First time I’ve dreamt of using a content management system.

  • I’ve been using Otter.ai to transcribe the introductions from our guest deejays. I still have to edit the text but it’s amazing what the AI can accomplish.

  • This morning I mixed the first episode of Genius and Soul. Aside from a minor edit and, time permitting, re-recording my segments, the first episode is ready to go live January 1, 2022. It’s amazing that five months ago, Genius and Soul did not exist, and now it’s two weeks away from being launched into the world. I hope you’ll join us in this endeavor.

    Brian Jackson came to my house this week to record the introduction to his mix for Genius and Soul. Brian was generous with his time and shared his thoughts, memories, and feeling about each song in his mix. It was everything I hoped for when we first developed the idea of what the show would be. You’ll be able to hear Brian’s mix when we launch on January 1.

  • We Celebrate the Life of Barry Harris

    Though saddened by his passing, we must celebrate the enormous contribution that Barry Harrismade to Black classical music. He truly kept the flame alive as a pianist, improviser, musical theorist, and tireless educator who gave generations of musicians his deeply-developed understanding of the language of Bebop.

  • We Mourn the Passing of Greg Tate

    We mourn the passing of Greg Tate, he continues to inspire with his words and spirit: “jazz never went away; it just kept vibrating in its batcave, laying in stealthy wait for a shaken-and-stirred world to get hip and revolutionary-minded again, between wars and between the ears.”

  • Just finished writing the copy for the first episode of Genius and Soul. Now I need to record, edit and mix the show. Our launch date of January 1st will be here before you know it.

  • I missed my flight last night and spent way too much on a hotel room. I woke up to find that Carlos Niño had sent me his mix for Genius and Soul. Looking forward to losing myself in his mix on the way home. Better yet, I’m looking forward to sharing it with you.
